Thinking about Counselling but not quite sure what to expect?

The prospect of starting counselling can be daunting especially if it's your first time. If you've reached a point in your life where you're thinking I really need to talk to someone but I'm also not quite sure what to expect, then this guide is for you.

Here's everything you need to know and a little bit about me and my work as a psychotherapeutic counsellor.

What exactly is counselling, and how does it work?

Counselling is a collaborative process where a trained professional, known as a therapist or counsellor, provides a safe and confidential environment to help individuals address various concerns. Through talking, active listening, and evidence-based techniques, counselling assists individuals in gaining insights, coping with challenges, and making positive changes in their lives.

How do I know if I need counselling?

Consider counselling if you're facing persistent challenges that affect your daily life, relationships, work, or overall well-being. These challenges might include overwhelming stress, persistent sadness, anxiety, relationship issues, grief, or difficulty coping with life changes.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes, counselling is confidential. Therapists are bound by ethical guidelines to maintain confidentiality, except in situations where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. Confidentiality promotes a safe space for open and honest communication.

How long will therapy take?

The duration of therapy varies depending on individual needs and the complexity of the issues. Some clients find relief in a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy. As your therapist we would discuss the estimated duration based on your specific concerns.

What therapeutic approach do you use?

I utilize an integrative process which incorporates a person-centered, evidence-based approach tailored to your needs. This may include cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness techniques, or other proven methods designed to address your concerns effectively.

How much does counselling cost, and do you accept insurance?

Session fees can be found under the book online section and can be discussed during the initial free consultation. It's essential to inquire about insurance coverage if you plan to use it, as policies and coverage differ - I do accept WPA, Vitality & Aviva insurers.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can assist with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship problems, grief, trauma, self-esteem, and personal growth. It provides support for various life challenges.

How will you involve me in the counselling process?

Your active participation is vital. We will work collaboratively, setting goals and regularly reviewing your progress. Your insights and feedback guide the therapy process.

What qualifications and experience do you have?

I am a fully qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor with many years of experience. I hold a degree in Psychology and a diploma in Psychotherapeutic counselling practice, and my experience includes working with clients dealing with diverse challenges.

How do I prepare for my first session?

Simply come with an open mind and a willingness to discuss your concerns. You don't need to prepare extensively. The initial session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and understand your goals for counselling.

Can I bring up spiritual or religious beliefs in counselling?

Absolutely. Your beliefs and values are essential aspects of who you are. Feel free to discuss spiritual or religious matters; they can be integrated into the counselling process if they are meaningful to you.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

Life can be unpredictable. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please inform me at least 48 hours in advance whenever possible. This allows us to adjust the schedule accordingly.

I hope these answers provide clarity. If you have any more specific questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.
